Who Needs Protection Against Crime?

The quick answer: everyone. In today’s uncertain times, crime rates are on the rise almost as quickly as unemployment. As a student, I have found burglary and assault instances increase dramatically on campus and its surrounding neighborhoods. As a homeowner, I’ve watched my once-quiet neighborhood fall victim to numerous assault crimes and recent drug-trafficking activity. Although I do not condone crime in any form, I can’t help but wonder if these changes are a result of the ever-changing economic shifts we are currently experiencing and the inability of many to find decent-paying jobs. I have discovered, that amidst the hardship, there are things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Here are a few of them:

1. Get involved! Form a crime watch association within your neighborhood or join an existing one already in place. The more that you are aware of the business in your neighborhood, the better you will be prepared to make changes and alert proper authorities should the need arise. In my own experiences as a neighborhood watch block captain, I’ve found that “protected” neighborhoods tend to get more attention from law enforcement agencies (patrols, new lighting, etc.).

2. Install a security system. It is a known fact that thieves and intruders are far less likely to enter a home that has a security system installed. There are many ‘membership-based’ security systems which require a low-monthly fee for service. Another option is a stand alone dialing unit which can be installed by the home-owner and requires no monthly fee. These tend to work better for those on a budget.

3. Form buddy systems with trusted neighbors. Have them pick up your mail and papers while you are out of town. This is another advantage of forming a neighborhood watch association. Let them periodically check up on your home, preferably in the evenings, to give your home an occupied appearance.

4. Use personal protection. Many companies offer a wide range of pepper sprays, stun guns and personal distress alarms to protect you during your walks to your car and while leaving your home. These are a great alternative to owning firearms and having to obtain concealed carry permits. Many crimes happen while people are searching for their keys or unloading groceries. Before buying pepper spray or a stun gun, you should read this short article on pepper sprays.

I hope this has helped you begin to safeguard your loved ones and your belongings. Please check back for more specialized topics in the future.
